Take a Bite out of Homelessness!

September 29, 2009 by Elizabeth · Leave a Comment

The time is almost here…

That’s right – Apple Fest is this coming Thursday, October 1st! We’ll be on Monument Circle (you really can’t miss us) from 10:30am – 1:30pm serving up Applebee’s food, warm apple cobbler and cold ice cream – all while Bandwagon sets the tone of the lunch hour with their live music!

The weather looks like it will be beautiful, and all proceeds will go to our Homelessness Bites Campaign so you don’t even have to feel guilty about “eating out”!

Tell you what… if you bring a new or gently used children’s coat for the Bob Gregory Coats for Kids Drive, we’ll even give you a free apple cobbler. Yes – Free. You really can’t beat free.

See you Thursday on the Circle…

Ships and Harbors…

September 25, 2009 by Elizabeth · Leave a Comment

“A ship in a safe harbor is safe, but that’s not what a ship is built for.” ~William Shedd

It’s true, you know – the quote above. And just like ships weren’t built to sit safely in a harbor, people weren’t made to sit idly by as the world around them cries out for help. Sitting on the sidelines and watching is safe, but it is also a passive acceptance of what is going on. Talk is nothing but talk – how many times have you heard the adage, “Actions speak louder than words”?

People are created to care, to empathize, to listen, to help, to survive, to work hard, to make mistakes, to learn from those mistakes, to believe, to hope…

This year, be part of events and programs going on in your community – helping your neighbors in need. This year, stand up and say, “Enough!” This year, venture out of the harbor.

Coats for Kids – Set-Up Help Needed!

September 22, 2009 by Elizabeth · Leave a Comment

“It just feels like, through our little projects and visits, we are being the hands and feet of God.” ~ Women From Faith (Newsletter)

Hello! First of all – thank you so much for being so interested in helping with Coats for Kids! I’ve had a lot of people sign up recently to help with the event (and could still use a few more) so really, Thank You.

It seems, however, that most people want to help with the Distribution Day. This absolutely makes sense – walk around with a family, help them pick out a coat for their child – not to mention it is on a Saturday.

But see, there can be no Distribution if there is no Set-Up. This year we’ve added evening shifts for those of you who work during the day but still want to help! Besides, Set-Up is a blast! We have music playing, a great group of volunteers, food… you really can’t go wrong.

Here are the shifts: Read more

Coats Drive in Full Swing!

September 15, 2009 by Elizabeth · Leave a Comment

“If every American donated 5 hours a week, it would equal the labor of 20 million full-time volunteers.” ~Whoopi Goldberg

Monday, September 7th marked the official beginning to the Coats for Kids drive that is sweeping Indianapolis! We’re anticipating a much greater need for coats this year than ever before, so please be sure to bring a new or gently used childrens winter coat to any of the following locations:

  • Tuchman Cleaners (click link for Indianapolis Area Locations)
  • Apple Fest – Thursday, October 1st (click link for more info)
  • Lucas Oil Stadium – Sunday, October 4th

And, if you bring a new or gently used childrens winter coat to Apple Fest – we’ll give you a free serving of deliciously warm Apple Cobbler, complete with vanilla ice cream (or without if you’d prefer). Well worth checking out!

I know it’s still warm outside now, but it won’t be for long. We need to get winter coats to children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford one, before the chilly air hits. Before the first snow of the season. Before the 2 hour windchill delays. We need to get them to the children now.

If you would like to volunteer for this incredible event – the Set-Up and/or Distribution of Coats for Kids, please let me know. We can use all the help we can get – especially with Set-Up. Without organization, Distribution can’t happen.

Visit us on Monument Circle!

“A year, ten years from now, I’ll remember this; not why, only that we were here like this, together.” ~Adrienne Rich

On Friday, September 11th, you’ll be able to find The Salvation Army right downtown! Join us from 11am-2pm around Monument Circle for the Community Fair in remembrance of 9/11.

A Legacy Walk, beginning with a commemorative program (keynote speaker – Mayor Ballard), will take place at 10am, with the walk starting at 11am – and will lead right to Monument Circle.

If you’d like to hear the program, it will be held at the War Memorial on the North steps, off of Michigan Rd.

See you there!
