A message from the Development Director

“We are looking for an intern. Not just any intern, but a social media intern. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable using Facebook and Twitter and can write a blog. We need someone who has a command of grammar rules and the savvy to know when to break them. We need someone who wants to help drive the online conversation of one of the most recognizable nonprofits in the world.
Think you have what it takes to be the Social Media Intern for The Salvation Army? Well, here’s your assignment:
I don’t want your resume. I don’t want a boilerplate cover letter that is riddled with clichés about being goal oriented or results driven. What I want you to do is find me, friend me, tweet me, and/or comment on my blog. Convince me you know how to use social media. Show me you are creative and resourceful. I’m the Development Director for The Salvation Army in Indiana. Show me what you’ve got.”
So – if you’re in college (or know someone who is) and are looking for an internship… Hey – it could be fun!

“It is a curious fact that people are never so trivial as when they take themselves seriously.” ~Oscar Wilde
This week, let’s focus on the spirited fun that is “Strange and Unique Holidays!” We could all use a little more humor and a little less seriousness in our lives – hope this helps!
- Monday, July 20th – Ugly Truck Day
- Tuesday, July 21st - National Junk Food Day
- Wednesday, July 22nd – Ratcatcher’s Day
- Thursday, July 23rd – National Hotdog Day
- Friday, July 24th – Cousins Day
- Saturday, July 25th - Threading the Needle Day
- Sunday, July 26th – All or Nothing Day
And there you have it. If you had any doubt as to how you were going to spend your week, hopefully this has been able to help point you in the right direction!

Christmas in July?

“Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.” ~Sally Koch
It looks like Christmas is coming early this year – for us here at The Salvation Army anyway. Our numbers of service requested at our Corps and our shelters is on the rise and we’re anticipating the highest level of need to hit this holiday season. So yeah, we’re already talking Christmas around here!
Here’s how you can help. Look up at the top of this page for a button that says “2009 Special Events.” Take some time to look it over and really get a feel for what we do here.
Then, if you see something you’re interested in, something that you want to help with, send me an email or give me a call. I’ll get you set up. It will take everyone’s help this year to ensure a great holiday season for our neighbors in need.

“Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience.” ~Paulo Coelho
It’s difficult out in “the real world” these days – especially for people just out of college with little or no work experience. The Salvation Army can help with that.
We are currently recruiting for 2 internships, both of which will give you the experience that your future employers will be looking for and will give you a chance to work with one of the top ranked international non-profits (we even pay a $750 stipend to help with your costs of living!).

Thrift Store Story…

“I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be.” ~Douglas Adams
I found myself in a Salvation Army thrift store the other day, shopping for 2 small decorator tables that I could paint and use in my new apartment. First off – if you haven’t been to a Salvation Army thrift store lately – please go check them out! There are so many great deals!
Anyway, I found the exact tables that I was looking for! All of you thriftstore shoppers out there know that it often times takes a great deal of looking and digging to find *exactly* what you’re looking for. But there they were – 3 for $14.99.
The problem was, I only needed 2. I figured I could just take all three and find somewhere to stick the 3rd. I paid and as I was walking out, a women stopped me and commented on the tables, asking if there were anymore. I said no, I bought the last of them, and took a couple steps.
Then it dawned on me. I didn’t need all 3. I turned back around and asked the women if she wanted the extra table. Turns out she was looking for the same tables I was – and only needed one!
Funny how sometimes we seem to be in the right place at the right time.
