Themes anyone?

January 31, 2008 by Elizabeth · Leave a Comment

“We must have a theme, a goal, a purpose in our lives. If you don’t know where you’re aiming, you don’t have a goal.” ~Mary Kay Ash

I’ve made a decision. Sort of.

I think it would be really cool if we could theme each day of this blog. You know – like how every Monday you can count on me telling you what the upcoming things to celebrate for that week are. But what about Tuesday – Friday? What would you like to count on?

The possibilities are endless. I could do a guest blogger every week, or an interview, review a recipe, point you to a fun internet site, do International Salvation Army news… So – what theme do you want each individual day to take on? I’m definitely open to suggestions and bear in mind that if I don’t get any, I’ll have to take it upon myself to theme this blog. That could be scary.

Seriously though, I really would like your input on this, so if you have any ideas at all, leave them on a comment and then remember to check back early next week for the chosen themes and their corresponding days!

Escape Day…

“If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape a hundred days of sorrow.” ~Chinese Proverb

Welcome to Escape Day! That’s right, National Escape Day this year is January 30. But just what is Escape Day, you ask? Me too.

According to my research (typing in “escape day” and “celebrate” to Google), it seems that how any of us celebrate Escape Day can be just as unique as those pesky snowflakes that we’ll all be seeing too much of in the next few days.

The first step in celebrating it is to ask yourself what frustrates you. Is it the way your brother always has to be right? The way some things that should be really simple, somehow aren’t?

And what stresses you out? Vexes you? Irritates you? Read more

Newness…

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” ~Alan Watts

Don’t say I didn’t warn you – because I did! The new volunteer database is essentially up and running. The last thing that remains is for you – the volunteers – to get your screen names and passwords from me. Yes, you do indeed already have screen names and passwords – both of which you can change once you get the first ones from me. Now, we can do that one of two ways (which both really end up being the same…) either you can email me/leave a comment and say you want to be ahead of the trend and get your screen names/passwords right now, OR you can wait until I send out an email to the group to let me know you want yours. The choice is yours…

Never volunteered with us before? No problem, just click on “Sign Up Here” on the right hand sign of the screen and fill out the application! We’ll get you set-up in no time.

So, if you’re a current volunteer and want your screen name and password early (and you deserve it because you’re reading this!) let me know. If you’re a future volunteer, then I look forward to meeting you!

Goal accomplished…

“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” ~T. S. Eliot

It’s official! The Salvation Army Indiana Division has officially reached our goal of 2.75 million dollars! Technically, we’re at 100.3% of our goal. If you were wondering…!

And we couldn’t have done it without the support of the community – volunteerwise, financially and with donations. So, we’d like to turn right around support the community! The money we raised during our 2007 Tree of Lights Campaign will be used to fund the programs throughout the state of Indiana – everything from corps to homeless and domestic violence shelters, and events like Coats for Kids and Toy Shop. You were here for us in 2007, we’ll be there for you in 2008 just like we always have been. THANK YOU!

Changes to come…

“If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies.” ~Unknown

Volunteering as you know it is about to change. Over the past three days, all of the corps in the Indiana Division have come down to headquarters to take part in a training session for a new volunteer database.

A new database – long overdue – means some changes for you, the volunteers, are on the horizon… Pretty soon, you’ll be able to create your own volunteer profile, check upcoming events/shifts/schedules, sign up for events online, confirm that you’ll be there, indicate your availability and interests, and be kept up-to-date on the most recent volunteer opportunities as soon as they come out!

I’ll let you know when the new system is in place and how you can create your own profile a bit later.

Also, if anyone is interested, Emergency Disaster Services is holding another training course (Introduction to Emergency Disaster Services) on Saturday, Feb. 23rd at DHQ (3100 N. Meridian St.). Let me know if you’d like to attend and I’ll get more information to you!

And, until Monday, have a great weekend!

~Elizabeth
