Goodbye until October…

“Time flys like an arrow – Fruit flys like bananas.” ~Joke my dad says

I’m not sure where September went. Come to think of it, I’m not sure where this week went. Why is it that time seems to speed up the older you get? I remember being a child and feeling like the weeks dragged on and a year was certainly forever. Now, it seems like I remember Monday, most of Tuesday and then it is magically Friday. I’m not completely convinced that Wednesday and Thursday exist.

Maybe time speeds up because the older you get, the more perspective you have. I mean, being 7 years old means your entire life has been only 7 years, a couple of which you probably don’t remember due to being an infant and all… Your frame of reference is remarkably narrow at that age. Read more

“Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves?” ~Robin Williams (Mork and Mindy)

I was late to work today. Driving on the interstate will sometimes cause that, especially when there are 3 accidents. Everyone has seen them and everyone has been slowed (or stopped) by them when on their way to somewhere important.

But what is really important in these situations? Is it a life or death situation that you make it to where you are going on time? Sometimes, maybe, in some professions, but in general?

It’s annoying. I’ll give you that, to be at a dead stop on the interstate. But it would be so much worse to be the one in the accident. At these times, the lives of the crash victims really is more important than the majority of destinations of travelers on the interstate. I had to remind myself of that very frequently today. You know, I start all of these posts with quotes that other people – famous people – have said that may or may not hold any relevance to, well, anything. What does it take to be quoted though? Would it be a social fauxpaux to quote myself? Or my friends?

What sort of social standing must a person have in order to have their quote taken seriously? Lets explore this using a vast means of technology and some good old-fashioned common sense. Read more

“You can turn painful situations around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything, even poverty, then you can survive it.” ~Bill Cosby

And last night, we laughed. Five comedians came together to combine their talents into a spectacular fundraiser for The Salvation Army dubbed “Comics That Care.” Stories about taking a senior prom date to Bob Evans – then asking if Bob was working that evening, about diet pills providing just enough energy to get up and make something to eat, and references to Greenwood as being “the deep south” evoked laughter from well over 100 IUPUI students and area residents.

And what did the comics care about? Read more

“Tug on anything at all and you’ll find it connected to everything else in the universe.” ~John Muir

I’m continually amazed at how many of us there are out there. How many people who have volunteered so passionately with The Salvation Army and how many of have been employed by them. How many people whose lives have been changed - for the better – by receiving help from The Salvation Army whether through domestic violence or homeless shelters, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, or children’s camps.

I was sitting outside with Baxter (the dog) a few days ago minding my own business, writing an entry in this blog when my neighbor said hello. He recently moved to my apartment complex and we got into a conversation. Read more
